New Mexico Senator Advances Semiautomatic Rifle Ban

Gun News

New Mexico State Senator Debbie O’Malley introduces a bill aiming to ban the sale and transfer of semiautomatic rifles, reflecting her concerns after experiencing gun violence firsthand in Albuquerque. The proposed legislation, known as the Gas-Operated Semiautomatic Firearms Exclusion Act (GOSAFE), seeks to limit high-capacity magazines and requires gun owners to undergo a certification process, sparking both support and opposition across the political spectrum.

Polling from Everytown for Gun Safety indicates 62% of New Mexico adults favor an assault weapons ban, highlighting bipartisan concerns about gun violence. However, opponents, including Second Amendment advocates, argue the bill unfairly targets legal gun owners and could spark increased firearm sales out of fear it may become law. As the legislative session unfolds, the debate promises to be one of the most contentious in state history.
